Why Do I Stay in Education?

This week, Beth Shaum is asking teachers the big question of why they persist “despite educational policies that are having a deleterious effect on good teachers staying in the classroom.”

    Here’s what makes me stay:

Check out what reasons motivate teacher across the country in Beth’s video embedded below.

    1. Hi Erica! I found your website through your prezi on Close Reading. Love your enthusiasm for teaching reading! I am a literacy coach for grades K – 5, but love teaching reading in the upper grades. You mentioned somewhere that you presented at your state’s reading conference. Will you be attending the IRA conference in San Antonio this year? Thanks for sharing on your site!

      1. Thanks, Ashleigh! I’m so glad you found your way here. It’s always nice to “meet” another literacy enthusiast, especially an elementary coach with interest in upper grades! I saw your connection notice on Goodreas. If you’re on Twitter, I’d love to connect with you there as well.

And yes, you’re right. My colleague, Dave Stuart, and I presented at the Michigan Reading Association conference this year. We would LOVE to attend IRA this fall. In fact, with great optimism, we submitted a proposal to present on Close Reading at NCTE in Boston. The thing is–like many others–our district funds are not really in a place to support long-distance travel. Still, we can hope, because I love getting a chance to actually meet, like in real-life, awesome online connections. Will you be attending this year? Hopefully, I can glean from you some of the great stuff that you acquire while there.

Thanks for the hello! I look forward to learning from you. 🙂
